Symbolic Nation-building through Images in Post-Yugoslav History Textbooks

Abstract The use of history textbooks in order to instill particular images the nation and national identity has been widely recognized, with a proliferation studies focused on problematic content textbooks. Yet, rely range other media like maps, graphs, illustrated timelines, photographs, which also play an important role visually signposting nation. While some these serve primarily as form representation aligned text itself, aspects visual distinctly autonomously construct identity. In this piece, relying qualitative analysis, we point function played by symbolically constructing contemporary primary school five post-Yugoslav republics, Bosnia Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro, Serbia, Slovenia.
